Ensuring a Secure Underwater Experience
Diving in Raja Ampat offers unparalleled opportunities to explore vibrant coral reefs, encounter fascinating marine life, and create unforgettable memories. However, ensuring a safe diving experience requires careful preparation and adherence to essential safety guidelines.
Join us at Soul Scuba Divers as we share diving safety tips to help you enjoy a secure and enjoyable underwater adventure in Raja Ampat.
Dive with a Certified and Experienced Operator
Choose a reputable dive operator with certified and experienced dive guides who are familiar with the local dive sites and conditions. Verify their credentials and safety records before booking your dive trip. At Soul Scuba Divers, our team of experienced professionals prioritizes safety and provides personalized attention to ensure a secure and memorable diving experience for our guests.
There are multiple certified dive centers around Raja Ampat, you can find registered SSI Dive Centers on the SSI website. Being in a remote area means that everything gets a bit more pricey, from the price of petrol to the lack of shops around. Check that the diving gear is in good condition and well-maintained.
Don't make your cheaper option to break your dreams. Remember that the nearest operating decompression chamber is in Manado. Have you considered having your own travel and diving insurance?

Conduct a Pre-Dive Check
Before each dive, conduct a thorough pre-dive check of your equipment, including your regulator, BCD (buoyancy control device), dive computer, and tank. Ensure that everything is in proper working condition and securely fastened. Familiarize yourself with the location of emergency equipment, such as the alternate air source and SMB (each BCD has SMB in the pocket), and communicate any concerns or questions with your dive guide.
First dive is for you and us to get to know each other and see which level you are to handle stronger currents. The currents in Raja Ampat comes at surprise for some people, even for experienced divers.
Trust your guides and dive operators experience in the dive site planning as they have local knowledge of the area and can read the ocean. You will dive amazing locations with us here and don’t expect to go to the most famous dive sites as your first dive, as they can be quite challenging, especially if you go at the wrong time. Trust the progress and enjoy your dives more.
Respect Marine Life and Preserve the Environment
Respect the marine environment and avoid touching or disturbing coral reefs, marine life, and underwater artifacts. Practice good buoyancy control to minimize the damage on fragile ecosystems and refrain from collecting souvenirs or marine specimens. Leave only bubbles and take only photographs, leaving the underwater world pristine for future generations to enjoy.
We have a non-profit foundation, Soul Initiatives, which runs many conservation projects. We also launched a crowdfunding campaign to build the 1st waste management system in Raja Ampat. Read more about our missions here and if you can, please help us to maintain Raja Ampat as pristine as it is now. Diving with us also contributes to the cause as 100% of the profits we make go into our conservation projects.
Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun and Wind
Stay hydrated before, during, and after your dives to prevent dehydration and fatigue. Don’t forget to bring your reusable bottle of water as fresh filtered water is avaialable here. Protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays by wearing reef-safe sunscreen(Did you know we have a natural sunscreen that is reef-safe avaialble at our dive shop?), a rash guard, and a wide-brimmed hat. Stay shaded between dives and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during surface intervals and boat transfers.
Whether you're a seasoned diver or just starting your underwater journey, safeguarding your ears is essential for a pleasant and worry-free dive. Underwater pressure changes can cause discomfort or even injury your ears. Decent and Ascent slowly by equlazing your ears.
To protect your ears from the wind while traveling to or out of the dive sites with puff, towel or sarong. You can also purchase your Soul Scuba Divers puff at the Dive Center.
Follow Local Regulations and Guidelines
Familiarize yourself with local regulations and guidelines for diving in Raja Ampat, including marine protected areas, dive site etiquette, and conservation initiatives. Respect designated no-entry zones and adhere to established dive codes of conduct to minimize impact on the marine environment and support sustainable tourism practices.
